WARRINGTON Rylands are set to sign one of their play-off rivals’ former managers as a player for the remainder of the season.

It is understood Mark Duffy, who parted ways with Macclesfield earlier this season, has agreed to join the Gorsey Lane men in a playing capacity to add experience to their squad.

The 38-year-old midfielder could make his Blues debut when they host Matlock Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division tomorrow in a bid to get their promotion bid back on track after a run of one win in eight matches.

Duffy has made more than 500 career appearances, most notably for Sheffield United, for whom he played a key role in a rise from League One to the Premier League between 2017 and 2019.

He has also represented the likes of Birmingham City, Scunthorpe United and Doncaster Rovers among others before joining Macclesfield in 2022, helping them to back-to-back titles and promotions to elevate them to the Northern Premier League’s top flight.

Having been player/assistant coach at Moss Rose last season, Duffy was appointed head coach in the summer but left the club at the end of October following a run of four defeats in five matches.
