A HOME defeat to Gainsborough Trinity capped a week to forget for Warrington Rylands this afternoon.

Having seen manager Michael Clegg depart for Macclesfield on Thursday, senior players Dean Furman and Sam Wilson were in caretaker charge and saw their side fall behind early through Dylan Howe’s goal.

Mo Touray had pulled Blues level just before the hour, but then came the period that swung the game against them.

Djavan Pedro was sent off with 15 minutes of the game remaining and from the resulting free kick, Dylan Cogill put Gainsborough back in front.

Joe Stacey and Howe’s second put gloss on the result for the visitors as Blues dropped to fourth in the Northern Premier League Premier Division table as a result.

However, Wilson insists the scoreline does not “tell the full story” of the contest as they battled a flu outbreak within the squad.

“I really sympathize with the group – there were four or five players who probably shouldn’t have been on the pitch today,” he said.

“We’ve had a tough week irrespective of the obvious things in that we’ve had a flu outbreak in the group.

“At 11 v 11, I may be biased but I thought there was only one team going to win the game but we go down to 10 men and they score directly from that free kick which is a disappointing goal.

“Then the nature of the following two goals epitomised the rest of the afternoon.

“The scoreline doesn’t tell the full story but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves.”
