MICHAEL Clegg has not ruled out further tweaks to his Warrington Rylands side’s set-up as they prepare for back-to-back away fixtures.

Blues are due to make the trip north to face Workington tomorrow before heading south to round off the month by facing Basford United next weekend as they bid to continue the only remaining unbeaten away record in English football’s top seven tiers.

The trip to Cumbria comes hot on the heels of Rylands’ first win of 2024 as they bested fellow play-off contenders Whitby Town 1-0 at the weekend.

That game saw Clegg switch to a three-man defence and he says they could continue with that formation going forward if the situation demands.

And with the Gorsey Lane side still sitting second in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, he spoke of the importance of being flexible as they continue to cement their promotion credentials.

“We had a look at it (on Saturday) and then when we came under a bit more pressure, we went back to a 4-3-3,” he said of the new formation.

“We recruited in the summer for 3-5-2 but we just haven’t been able to do it – Reegs (Matt Regan) got injured, then Sam Egerton did as well, so we’ve not had that momentum to keep it going.

“Then when we did so well playing 4-3-3, we didn’t switch from that but it’s good to be flexible.

“People have found out at times how to make us struggle, so we have to be flexible.

“At the end of the day, we’re second in the league – we’ve got to be thinking and working on different things and we’ve got to have more strings to our bow.”

Rylands will hope to have top scorer Adama Sidibeh available again after the 15-goal frontman missed Saturday’s game through illness.

This weekend’s opponents Workington are strong on their own turf having lost just twice at Borough Park in the league this season but are currently on a run of just one victory in their past 10 league outings, although seven of those games have ended in draws.

Blues were 1-0 winners when the sides met at Gorsey Lane back in October, with Matt Regan scoring the winning goal.
