A WARRINGTON hotel will double its capacity by increasing the number of rooms available.

This is by giving up bar, restaurant and function space and converting the ground floor to accommodation.

Plans had been submitted to Warrington Borough Council’s planning department for Villaggio Hotel in Bewsey.

These sought permission for alterations to the front elevation of the Folly Lane site, as well as a rear extension to the existing hotel building.

In addition, proposals sought approval for internal alterations and a change of use to the existing restaurant to create additional hotel rooms.

Having been considered by planners, consent for the changes has now been given.

Documents submitted as part of the application state: “Currently, the hotel offers accommodation only at first-floor level, with the ground floor not being used.

“The ground floor had previously been used for bar areas, restaurants and functions. These ancillary uses are no longer a demand for the hotel, and as such are no longer required.

“The ground floor currently uses less than 10 per cent of the space. The first floor currently provides 25 hotel rooms, all of which are en suite.

“It is proposed that the front conservatory is removed, as is the infilled internal courtyard.

“The proposals will provide a further 25 en suite rooms at ground floor level. All other ancillary functions required for the hotel will be retained.”

Documents state that the new rooms will have the capacity to be disabled-friendly, allowing ‘complete flexibility and inclusivity’.

They conclude: “The proposals should be viewed as a positive contribution impact on the street scene, as removing a dated and low-quality front extension is a great benefit to the area.

“The rear extension will not impact on anyone else, and the external grounds are still more than adequate.

“Converting unused space into high-demand rooms is a good use of the building.”
