A GROUP of volunteers is looking to run Lymm's various walks and events for cheaper than borough council costs.

As previously reported in the Warrington Guardian, Lymm's Duck Race was cancelled this year because of the associated costs of road closures and marshalling.

And the future of other events in the village was also under threat, with the costs for individual festivals running into thousands of pounds for just one year.

Sean Kerfoot who heads up the group, told Lymm Parish Council if it was to buy road closure signs and cones, it would be only labour costs that would have to be met.

He said at the recent Dickensian festival labour was employed all day, when it was only needed for an hour in the morning and evening to set up and clear away.

He added: "It is the labour costs that are most expensive.

"I believe we can put these events on for significantly less than what we have been charged. It is initially quite a lot of money, but long term it would be cheaper."

Clr Ian Marks said he hoped the scheme would work.

He added: "I am very keen on this.

"This is a clear example of the community doing something for itself. I am quite sure this is a very sound investment plan."

The group will meet again this month to discuss the issue further, but it could be that members of Lymm Parish Council agree to help with the initial costs involved.
