A UNIQUE sports club that will combine football and tennis has shown off its new look.

Grappenhall Village Sports Club, based on Stockton Lane, held an official opening day on Sunday to mark the completion of a fantastic new sporting facility.

The opening was the result of a partnership between two clubs, Grappenhall Village Tennis Club and Grappenhall Sports Football Club.

As well as an appearance from celebrity guests such as former Everton and England star Dave Watson and tennis pro Roger Hughes along with deputy Mayor, Clr Celia Jordan, the day included a variety of entertainment with tennis tournaments, fastest serve contests and beat the goalie competitions.

Lorraine Sinclair from the club said the reopened venue was now one of the best in the area.

She added: "These are new, purpose-built facilities and Sunday was an excellent chance to showcase them.

"We now have a purpose-built, state of the art clubhouse too."

The venue boasts two full size football pitches, two junior pitches and eight new tennis courts, of which, five are floodlit.

The Stockton Lane site also has changing facilities and two function rooms with a licensed bar.

As previously reported in the Warrington Guardian, the venue had fallen into disrepair until the two clubs decided to join forces.

The tennis club moved from its previous home on Bradshaw Lane and the money received from the sale of the land from developers helped fund the move.

During the work, the club has been charting the colourful history of the Stockton Lane site, which dates back more than 100 years.
