Rangers and volunteers gear up for festivities

AROUND 4,000 people are expected to flock to Birchwood Forest Park for the town’s annual carnival on Sunday, June 2.

The day’s festivities launch with a procession around the park led by the Scots Guard Pipes and Drums at 12.30pm.

Judging of procession groups and prize-giving will mark the official opening of the event before arena acts take to the stage.

The afternoon includes a falconry display, dance group ‘Dance Inspire’, the Wire Choir, bike displays, the Scots Guard Pipes and Drums and a dog show.

There will also be a fairground, charity stalls and a local history display with plenty more for youngsters to do including an art workshop, donkey rides, drum workshop, and ‘nature in focus’ microscope.

David Hazlehurst, Birchwood Forest Park ranger, said: “We’ve put a lot into it this year. We’ve probably got the best line-up we’ve had for the past four or five years.

“It should be a really enjoyable day. It’s Birchwood’s biggest event and brings everyone together from Gorse Covert, Oakwood and Locking Stumps.”

The event is organised by a team of eight and takes about six months to put together.

David added: “It’s quite a huge task but we’re aided by Birchwood Carnival Committee, made up of volunteers in the community.

“All we’re hoping for now is a sunny day as we’ve had a run of terrible weather the last few years.”

There will also be a ‘green field’ area to promote the neighbouring Risley Moss.

This will include a bodging demonstration, willow weaving, chainsaw demonstration and live honey bees.

There is still time to join the procession or for charity stalls to book in.
